5 Benefits of Cover Letters

5 Benefits of Cover Letters5 Benefits of Cover LettersIncluding a cover letter is a great way to express your interest in a company and stand out against other candidates. Many candidates choose not to include cover letters, so putting in a little extra work can really go the extra mile for you in the long run.Of course, the overall idea is to make sure you are writing a proper cover letter it should be specific to the position youre applying for, centered on what youd bring to the table, and not focused on what youd want out of the company in terms of salary, progression or other demands. The five points below will explain the benefits of a cover letter and review how writing one can set you apart from the competition.1)Recruiters will see who put the work inJust the fact that not everyone includes cover letters with their resume is reason enough to write one. Its an extra touch that will help you stand out as a candidate. If you can personalize it with the personenname of your contac t or a specific person with hiring power within the company, that will display additional effort and initiative as well. Take the time, because others wont.2)Your resume is factual, your cover letter is personalUse a cover letter to shed light on the details of your resume. A cover letter gives you the opportunity to tell your professional story in a way thats more personal. For example, you could address a large gap in employment or change in career path. Bring your resume to life by referencing it in a personal letter to your professional contact within a company.3)Demonstrate your interestPutting in the additional work of writing a cover letter shows that you value the time of the individual receiving your resume enough to reciprocate by taking the time and effort to write them directly. Youre willing to put action behind entrance into their company. This is the perfect distribution policy to express why you want to work for them. Tell the company why youd be a good fit for the p osition. Tell them why you want the position.4)Show youve done your researchUse company-specific examples of what made you look to them as an employer, what sparked your interest in them, or any company initiatives that align with your values. Immediately, this approach sets you apart from mass LinkedIn applications, or individuals who have just clicked a button to apply with no care for the company deeper than the position at hand. Employers value loyalty, and this tactic will help set you apart as a candidate that wants a career, rather than to use the position as the next stop in your job hop.5)Give them a taste of who you areDepending on your writing style or skill level, you can get really creative with how you let your personality show through a cover letter. But no matter how skilled you are, its important to keep your cover letter concise so that the content is impactful. Make sure to sound professional- you can even use borrowed language from the company itself- but ultimat ely the voice of the cover letter should be your own. These five benefits will help you as a candidate by providing leverage that an application or resume alone wouldnt allow. While your resume provides an overview of your skills and experience, the cover letter is your opportunity to express your personality through paper. Give yourself a leg up on competition by supplying your kompetenzprofil employer with a chance to learn more about you.

How an NPR editor, and his daughter Ramona, turned a work fail into a win

How an NPR editor, and his daughter Ramona, turned a work fail into a winHow an NPR editor, and his daughter Ramona, turned a work fail into a winThere are many horror stories of employees airing personal opinions on their employers public social media accounts. There are executives publicly tweeting about private acquisitions and companies with social media handles that arelive-tweeting mass firings. No employer is immune, not even those at the highest levels of power. A Justice Department staffer in charge of the government agencys official Twitter handle once posted a tweet calling out CNN for being the biggest troll of them all lmao. The U.S. government then had to issue a press statement that the tweet was intended for a personal account and that the staffer had had their access revoked.A recent story, however, ends happilyOn Monday, NPR editor Christopher Dean Hopkins accidentally used NPRs Facebook account to tell the media organizations audience about his baby Ramonas adventu res.Hopkins quickly issued an apology, but by then the people were clamoring for more. Baby Ramona became Ramona. There was even a Change.org petitionwith more than 800 signatures to give the NPR staffer in charge of this moment of errant serendipity a raise. NPR later clarified in a story of their own that Ramona was in fact a baby, not a cat, as some had assumed.Ramona is a reminder for employees to always, always double-check what which social media account youre using before posting. You may not have the good fortune, as Hopkins had, to share a heartwarming story about a baby who loves cats.

Your Personal Brand A Career Advancement Must Have

Yur Personal Brand A Career Advancement Must HaveYour Personal Brand A Career Advancement Must HaveYour Personal Brand A Career Advancement Must HaveConsider this scene from the recently released Kevin Spacey movie, 21In an interview for a prestigious scholarship, the main character, Ben, tells his interviewer, Professor Phillips, that money is the only thing between him and fulfilling his long-held dream of attending Harvard Medical School. While the Professor appreciates Bens situation, he points out that only one partie can win the scholarship and that 75 other candidates have resumes just as impressive as Bens. The Professor notes bluntly, Unfortunately, desire just doesnt figure into this much, Ben. The scholarship is going to someone who dazzles someone who jumps off the page. Ben, its all about the essay. You really need to explain to us what makes you special. What life experience separates you from all the rest? What can you tell me, Ben, thats going todazzle me?Dazzle the Cro wdWhile this is a scene from a movie, it reflects the harsh reality of todays competitive workplace. No matter how much you want - or how right you may be for - a position or a promotion, if you are unable to set yourself apart from your competition, you will lose to the candidate who does. So, how do you dazzle the person making the decision regarding your next advancement? Take a cue from the marketing world and build a personal brand. As in the retail world, where the Starbucks mermaid or Amazon.com logo assure their customers of the quality experience they will encounter when they patronize those firms, your personal brand represents the unique value you promise to those who hire you.Your brand is defined by the accumulation of experiences, skills, and talents that distinguish you from others who do the same work as you. Like a retail brand, your personal brand encourages those who would employ you to trust your ability to deliver above par quality. You may be wondering, Why do I need a personal brand? Doesnt my resume speak for itself? In the words of author and business management guru Tom Peters, who coined the term brand you, Be distinct or be extinctIn a business climate where linear advancement and the 30-plus-year career with the same company are going the way of the dinosaurs, to remain competitive it is imperative that you shift the way you define yourself. Turn away from the blandness of the job titles and descriptions used by HR and toward the dynamic and compelling catalog of assets and qualities you possess. If the opportunity for advancement or the need for a new position arises, you dont want to be caught off guard looking vanilla in a sea of vanilla.Develop Your BrandBegin to develop your personal brand by probing your stand-out experiences, skills, and talents, with the following statementsMy background is unique because _____.My _____ makes me different from others who do the same job.As a insert career title here, Ive developed a reput ation for _____.At the heart of my experience are these three strengths _____, _____, ______.My former managers/peers would agree that the reason I am so good at what I do is _____.I have a natural talent for ______, which makes me better than fruchtwein at what I do.The two most important investments you can make in this self interviewing process are time and thought so, please dont cheat yourself. This is not an exercise that can be completed in 15 minutes it requires thoughtful soul-searching and reflection on your career. Many of us chafe at bragging about our accomplishments and skills. We tend to downplay our achievements and gloss over what makes us great - a hazardous tendency in todays competitive marketplace. To ensure that none of your assets fall victim to omission by modesty, solicit feedback from current or prior bosses and colleagues or anyone who would be willing to provide you with their honest input. Outsiders perspectives help us see ourselves in a more objective light, can validate what we suspect might make us special or unique, and can mitigate any anxiety we have about showcasing those gifts to the world.Look for ThemesOnce youve collected your own thoughts and others input, look for themes. Determine which skills, talents, and experiences repeat themselves. Which make you feel most proud? Which reflect best what you love to do? Which do you do better than anyone else? These are the building blocks of your personal brand. As in the retail world, only part of the power of a personal brand is found in delivering on the unique value promised. Regardless of your unique strengths, your brand will only be as effective as how compellingly you communicate it.Optimize Your LanguageThink about automaker BMW. What if, instead of, The Ultimate Driving Machine, BMW employed the slogan, A Really Good Car? Which slogan do you think commands the $50,000 $100,000 price tag attached to most of BMWs models?Like BMW, you must promote yourself powerfully wit h language that commands the attention of an employer through compelling, value-driven branding statements.Instead of, Im a great listener, you might say, I have the ability to listen to people so that they truly feel heard and understood. For that reason, I am able to build trust and long-term relationships with even the most difficult customers.Instead of, Im great at closing deals, you might say, I specialize and have a proven track-record in identifying, pursuing, and successfully closing complex, multi-million and -billion dollar technology contracts that meet customers specifications and propel my employer to new levels of revenue and profitability.A persuasive personal brand that convincingly and enthusiastically promotes the exceptional value you bring to an organization is your best tool in todays competitive workplace climate, and is well worth your effort and time.

5 things I wish someone told me before I started my first job

5 things I wish someone told me before I started my first job5 things I wish someone told me before I started my first jobGosh, they seem obvious after a while but no one actually gives you these tips in school.1. Know when to use Reply all and BccSeriously, no one sits anyone down and tells themLOOK. If you are going to send out an email to a large number of people, put all of their emails in Bcc so that 1) No one takes those emails and uses it as their own personal mailing list and 2) So that when people hit reply, the replies only go to you and whichever hosts you also put in TO line.BUT if you are on a big email where everyones addresses show up, dont hit Reply all when your response is only intended for the sender. Everyone will hate you.And I did all these things wrong, and YES, people did hate me.2. Take notesBring notebook and pen with you everywhere. At my first corporate job, my boss asked me, Do you even want to be here? I welches confused and mortified I thought I welches doing a good job She said that I looked bored in all the meetings, and recommended I bring a notebook and take notes. Such a simple solution I wasnt doing or saying anything in the meeting because I was so new, but I also was not actively listening and gathering information by taking notes. This led me to understand what was going on in the meeting better (I was able to review the notes with my manager after) and people perceived me as mora engaged. This does not end when you are experienced, take notes always I never go anywhere without my notebook.3. Dont send apologetic/wordy emails to executives who you are intimidated byIt makes you look not confident and inexperienced.I have some example emails here in this video of what to do, and what NOT to doSkip the preamble. Delete everywhere you write the word just, very, and any other language where you apologize.I use the Just not Sorry Gmail plugin that underlines weak language in my emails, check it out4. Ask tons of questions - Thi s is the most crucial advice EVERWhen you get assignments, your manager will think that they have explained everything clearly, but they always leave out key details that they assume are obvious. But since you are new, it is not obvious at all so you have to ask questions to make sure you have all the information you need.I have so many epic fail stories on this, here is oneI was asked to edit and email out contracts to people in the company. It seemed super simple, so didnt ask for more details. My boss came back to me later and was frustrated I had sent word documents to hundreds of people, when it was supposed to be PDFs so that they cant edit the content of the contract.Whose fault is that? Mine. I should have asked more questions.Speak up if you are confused - you are going to screw things up, come off as lazy, etc The problem wont be the manager, it will be youDont know what questions to ask? Make sure you understand exactly WHY the task is important. More context means you ll make more accurate decisions. You can watch a video here I made that gives you more questions to ask. This seems silly for small tasks but is actually hugely important. Always understand the full picture of what your work contributes to or else you WILL screw it up.5. Write handwritten cardsWhen I left my last job I wrote over 100 individualized handwritten notes to my coworkers. Yes, it took lots of hours, but these people were a huge part of my life, and it meant so much to them to be thought of.Next time someone does a good job - leads a project, plans an epic event leave a note on their desk instead of giving them a high five or a congrats email. I bet you they hold onto it for a long timeThere are so many ways to avoid cringe-worthy situations at your first corporate job, and one is to watch my YouTube Channel Self Made Millennial. I post every week check it outThis article first appeared on Quora.

How to Handle an Office Romance With Your Co-worker -The Muse

How to Handle an Office Romance With Your Co-worker -The MuseHow to Handle an Office Romance With Your Co-worker In an age when our professional and personal lives are mora blended than ever, its only natural that bro relationships happen. Even in the modern era of dating apps that make it easy to connect with someone new, one quarter of workers now say they have been romantically involved with a colleague. It makes sense- sharing long hours with like-minded people can be a major relationship catalyst. Marrying work and love (and maybe actually marrying your co-worker) might sound like an ideal situation, but navigating intertwining schedules and office hierarchies present their own pitfalls, not to mention spending all that time together. Here are some tips to help you navigate the perils of the modern workplace when it starts to get serious. Breaking the NewsWhen and how to the deliver the news that you and a co-worker are seriously dating (or maybe taking your relationship to the next level) is a personal choice. There isnt a one-size-fits-all solution or exact science, but some general guidelines can be helpful when you let the cat out of the bag. 1. Understand Company CultureThe company culture of every office is different- some might jump for joy and shower you both with congrats- while others may freak out in a different way. You are the best judge of what kind of environment youre working in. If youve felt the need to keep a tight lid on your dating, then an extravagant announcement at a company-wide meeting probably isnt the best way to go. Try approaching your peers individually to share the news in a more personal way to avoid distractions or negative commotion. If everyone already knows youre together and have embraced the relationship, then youre probably in the clear to get more creative with how you drop the big news.2. Know the RelationshipAnother point to consider before sharing the news is the working relationship you have with your significan t other. It can be difficult to know when youre ready to take the relationship to the next level. Its a personal question, but when it comes to office romance the key is trust in your partner. Can you trust them to handle the relationship responsibility and professionally (both in-and-out of the office)? You also need to think about your interactions at work and how this news may affect others. Do you work in different departments or directly on the same team? Are you peers, or is one person several levels above the other? If youre dating your direct supervisor (or vice-versa), almost all companies have rules in place surrounding this exact situation. You must have a game plan for how you address the issue before you spill the beans. 3. Chat with HRIf youre struggling to gauge the impact of the big reveal, the surefire way to mitigate any unwanted attention or career jeopardy is to talk with human resources. HR can give you advice about the official company policy on interoffice rela tionships, tips for protecting your professional reputation, and advice for informing your superiors. Many companies already have policies in place that require you to report your relationship to HR anyway, so check the guidelines in the handbook.4. Dont Tell People (at Least, Not Directly)The number one thing to remember about office relationships- theyre still relationships after you leave the office, and theyre your business. Outside of a formal declaration to abide by the rules of HR, youre not required to disclose the status of your relationship (your new apartment, your new bling, your new baby) with anyone. If you think it might adversely affect your situation, be tight-lipped. If someone asks, let them know that youd prefer to talk about work-related items at work and youd be happy to answer any questions about the big project youre working on instead. But what happens if a co-worker catches you two outside of work being well, couple-y? As long as youve followed company rule s to report the relationship to the proper parties, then you should be in the clear. As for any rumors the colleague might spread, the good news is many offices now have policies specifically against that kind of behavior. Creating- and Enforcing- Your BoundariesSince youve made it this far already, you know that maintaining a healthy work and romantic relationship is no easy feat. With the two so inevitably blended, its important to set clear boundaries. The best way to do that? Leave work at the office and focus on your relationship when together while off-the-clock. You should already know not to bring home issues into the office, but its equally important to leave office quarrels at work. Establish some ground rules when it comes to company conflicts, and identify points where you may disagree. It can be tough when your partner doesnt take the same side as you when it comes to office politics, but if you love them, you wont let disagreements impact the decisions you make at home . Should You Leave Your Job?One of the most important decisions interoffice couples face is whether one should ever leave their job because of the relationship. With company policies around office romances seem more chill than in years past, this has more often become less of a requirement and more a quality of life change. Some couples may relish coming into the office together, and their office may bless their union wholeheartedly. For others, taking their romantic relationship to the next level can make them feel uneasy about their professional prospects at the company, or perhaps spur them to finally move on from a job they dont totally love. But in the instance of a subordinate dating a supervisor, lets say, what happens if you both love your job yet its necessary for one to leave? This is a tricky situation, but the most important life decisions tend to work themselves out if you truly love the other person. Think about what you want today and what you want in the future. If n either of you are willing to budge for the other person, it may be a sign that the relationship isnt as important as you thought. The decision should be a consensus, not one person forcing the other give up a career they love. Navigating the twists and turns of a serious office romance can be difficult, but knowing whats important to you and being flexible with the outcome can help you make any life-altering decisions. Words and phrases you should never include in your cover letter

Words and phrases you should never include in your cover letter Words and phrases you should never include in your cover letter It goes without saying that you always want to present yourself in the best possible light when you’re job searching. From how you structure your resume to what you say during a job interview, it all counts towards (and against) you during the selection and hiring process. But knowing what to say - or not say - in your cover letter is particularly important. Use the right wording, and you’re golden. Write the wrong thing, and your entire job application gets pitched in the “thanks but no thanks” pile.Read on for these words and phrases that you should never (ever) include in your cover letter.Ladders is now on SmartNews!Download the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.“I’m confident I’m the perfect person for the job.”Yes, confidence is a very good thing … except when you broadcast it on a job application. It can be a turn-off to a potential employer who might then look to see how you’re not the idea l candidate for the position. You can show your confidence in other ways, such as by making sure that your resume and cover letter are customized to the job description, citing specific work experiences, skills, and education that are needed for the job. Let your experience speak for itself - and keep your opinions about yourself to, well, yourself.“I need this job because … ”You might need the job because you’ve been job searching for a while. You might need the job because money is super tight, or because the job has a flexible schedule, which meets your need to work remotely. No matter what your reason is, it’s most likely personal, and personal doesn’t play out well in the professional world. Although you might think that you’ll be appealing to a hiring manager’s softer side, it might just wind up irking him instead.“I would like to know the salary range for this job.” or “I’m requesting a salary of … ”Talking money during the job interview process is a tricky topic, and even more taboo when you’ve just only applied for the position. While it would be lovely if all employers put the salary range in their job descriptions, most don’t.By asking upfront about money, it could come across to a potential employer that that’s all you care about, not the job itself or working for that specific company. So as much as you’re dying to know what the job pays, it’s best to wait until later on in the hiring process when you’re actually offered the job - and then you can negotiate salary.Words to avoid in your cover letter:“Good”Good is just that - good. It’s not fab nor is it horrible. It’s just kind of mediocre, and that is not the impression you want to give to a hiring manager about you or your abilities. So saying that your Spanish language skills are “good” doesn’t give your interviewer much of an idea of how good you really are.Are you fluent, or are you still rocking your high school Spanish? Substitute more descriptive words for good with ones like “strong” or “excellent.” Even “great” will do, too.“Best”Who doesn’t want to be the best at something (or several things)? But no matter how awesome you are at something, no one is ever the absolute best at anything. Replace the word “best” with more humble descriptive words like “skilled,” “accomplished,” “experienced,” or “successful.” Those still convey the idea of being the best, without being boastful.“Feel” or “Believe”You might strongly believe that you’d be a great fit at the organization, and feel it with all of your heart. Thing is, personal feelings have no place in your cover letter. Rewrite the sentence to not include these words, or drop it entirely. Believe us.In an effort to portray yourself in the best possible light, try to avoid using these words and phrases on your cover letter. It will make it cleaner, stronger, and potentially result in a new job! This article was original ly published on FlexJobs.com.

3 Ways to Actually Leave Work at The Office - The Muse

3 Ways to Actually Leave Work at The Office - The Muse 3 Ways to Actually Leave Work at The Office I’m willing to bet that you can think of a time when you were about to sit down for a meal, only to be interrupted by an “urgent” update at work that pulled you away from the table. You can probably tell me about at least a dozen times when this happened to your friends- and how annoying it was to tell them it was “Of course, OK” for them to respond right that second. Leaving work at work is tough for almost everybody. And while there isn’t one perfect answer, here are a few ideas to help you at least try. 1. Create a Calendar Reminder to Leave Work Every Day At one of my previous jobs, work-life balance was hard for everyone to achieve. One day, I caught a glimpse of an executive’s calendar and noticed he blocked off time for himself to leave the office. At first, I thought it was sad. I couldn’t fathom having to set aside time not to be at work. Fast forward a few years, and now I get it. Sometimes you get caught up in what you’re working on and simply forget to leave. Or you convince yourself that it’s OK to stay for just 30 more minutes, then an hour more. By the time you leave, your brain’s burnt out and you can’t carry on a normal conversation about anything else. So create a reminder for yourself that forces you to leave (or at the very least, serves as a friendly nudge). It might not work every single time, but it’s a good start toward leaving the office when your head still feels screwed on and you can think about other things. 2. Take Your Work Email Off Your Smartphone Full disclosure: I used to be the worst about checking work emails on my phone. Even though projects rarely got to the emergency stage, I was always ready for it. But when I caught myself checking my inbox during my brother-in-law’s graduation weekend, I realized that a simple fix was to un-sync my work accounts. After all, I was on my personal time on my personal phone. I can’t speak for every single company on the planet, but take a minute to review your team's email policy. If it doesn’t require you to set up your work account on your phone, be bold and remove it yourself. It’ll feel unsettling at first, but it’s one of the easiest ways to control when you are and aren’t thinking about your job. If that’s not an option for you consider turning off notifications or telling your team that they can always email you on your personal email if it’s urgent. 3. Write Down the First Thing You Need to Do the Next Morning This might sound silly, but think about what freaks you out the most when you walk away from your desk. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard people say that they just had too much to do before they could seriously leave for the night. And I’ve been there too- because sometimes it feels like no matter how long you work, one more task is bound to come up. And that means you always walk away feeling like you could’ve done more. That feeling is what results in you checking your phone all night or stressing about the next day. Rather than deal with that unsettled feeling every night, take a few minutes at the end of each workday to create a short list of what you have to do the next morning. Sure, an emergency could pop up, but knowing what’s on the docket as soon as you head in can help you feel like you’re in a good place to leave. I don’t think anyone will ever truly master the art of leaving work at work. There will always be reasons to check in with a teammate or peek at your email on a Saturday afternoon. But if you truly want to think about work less during your downtime, there is hope for you- and it starts with these steps.

4 Tips to Improve Your Hire-ability

4 Tips to Improve Your Hire-ability 4 Tips to Improve Your Hire-ability Whether you presently are looking for a new job or simply want to keep yourself marketable for down the line, there are plenty of actions that can serve you well at any time. Below are four strategies that may improve your hire-ability with employers. Here are four tips to improve your hire-ability: 1. Update your LinkedIn Profile Potential employers often see your profile before anything else. Ensure it leaves a positive first impression. (You do have a professional-looking, good-quality picture on it, right?) “Make a habit of updating your profile once a quarter,” says career advisor and  greyzone founder Tami Palmer. “Are there trainings or certifications you can now include? Does your summary tell your best story of who you are and what youre all about? Read your profile as if you were a recruiter and see how you can get more precise in your words and attract the right companies.” Consider further enhancing your profile by asking others for endorsements and recommendations. Most people are happy to help, and their testimonials encourage trust in your personal brand. 2. Stay Relevant Demonstrate that you’re someone who is always trying to learn and improve. Employers will value your initiative, your resume will benefit from the inclusion of additional classes or seminars, and you’ll have more to discuss at networking events or job interviews. Keeping on top of industry trends and new technologies is especially important to the marketability of older workers. “The easiest way to be seen as a dinosaur is to fall behind and off track,” says Roy Cohen, author of The Wall Street Professional’s Survival Guide: Success Secrets of a Career Coach. 3. Increase Visibility What comes up when you perform a search on your name? A strong online presence attracts attention and builds your professional reputation. Consider contributing articles to an industry publication or becoming a frequent, thoughtful commentator to a pertinent LinkedIn group. You even may want to create your own website as a central location for displaying examples of your work. Put some effort into your off-line visibility, too. Cohen suggests joining your industry’s professional association, perhaps even chairing a committee. “The visibility will offer you access to colleagues at other firms so that you build a robust network should you need it for a job search or to gather competitive information. It will also serve as a platform to promote your own company. When your cheerleading gets back to bosses and senior management- which it will- you score a point.” 4. Network And speaking of networking, when is the last time you had lunch with a former coworker or dropped an email to someone you met at a conference? Maintaining relationships is imperative whether you’re looking for a job or not. In addition to nurturing the ties you have, improve your hire-ability by stepping away from your comfort zone. Make a point of talking to people outside your own age group or who work in a different field. A diverse network provides multiple opportunities for others to see the great things you bring to the table! If youre in the market  for a new job, it also helps to target companies that are currently hiring. Whats Your Score Self-Audit For a Candidate-Friendly Job Application Process

Whats Your Score Self-Audit For a Candidate-Friendly Job Application Process Whats Your Score Self-Audit For a Candidate-Friendly Job Application Process Everywhere you turn it seems as if there is great news to be had when it comes to the US job market.  Unemployment is down, wages are starting to rise, and the general feeling is one of confidence and excitement for growth.  These are all great bits of news. That is unless you’re in the job of hiring. Quality candidates have more options than ever nowadays.  This means that the hiring field is solidly a candidate’s market.  Professionals from recruiters to hiring managers are needing to rethink their standard processes in order to locate, attract, and onboard quality individuals.  Cumbersome online applications with a host of onerous and lengthy processes are going to see recruiters losing out on top talent. Similarly long and over-wieldy interview sessions will turn off all but the most desperate on the job market. If you’re serious about hiring serious candidates, employers need to take a step back and evaluate all aspects of their hiring process.  From recruitment and identification to the application process to follow up and communication, even the small details can make a big difference in hiring and retaining the best quality talent.   Are you potentially losing quality candidates who are turned off by your process?  Want to know how you stack up with other major players? Are your applications accessible across the widest number of platforms?  We’ve tasked our professionals to come up with a self-audit to see just where your hiring process is at. Answer honestly and get help identifying easy changes to improve your hiring chances. 1. Perform an online search for “[your company] careers.” What page on your website are you directed to? Well-positioned companies will find themselves directed to their personal “Careers” page? +1 2. What is on your “Careers” landing page? Does the page contain information about the company, its products, its values, and the work environment? Is the page easy to read, in clear language, with relevant images? Does the page readily show available jobs or show how to search for open jobs? +1 +1 +1 3. When you click on a job description, what happens? Is the job description clearly laid out, with an overview of the position, responsibilities, minimum requirements, and benefits information? Is there a clear link to apply in every job description? +1 +1 4. What is the application process? Are the requirements simple? Contact information, a resume, a cover letter, visa status, and any EOE information are the minimum requirements. Do candidates need to create a login and a password? Do candidates need to enter information in separate fields instead of providing an option to automatically pull from an updated resume? This might include the name of each employer, duties, dates of work, etc. Do candidates need to provide information not typically needed until later in the process, such as references, social security number, birth date, etc.? +1 â€"1 â€"1 â€"1 5. What is the notification process? Do applicants receive notification of receipt of their application within one business day? Do they receive notification of rejection in a reasonable timeframe? Resume scanning systems that reject candidates within minutes, even on a Saturday night, create a negative company perception. +1 +1 6. What is the mobile experience? (Conduct the same search on a smartphone.) Does the candidate have to scroll sideways to view content? Is it easy to conduct a search on mobile? Is it easy to apply on mobile? â€" 1 +1 +1 7. How does your interview process measure up? Are interviewers on time for their meetings? Do interviewers know why they have been chosen to interview each candidate and what criteria they are expected to assess? Do interviewers dominate the interview time, allowing the minimal opportunity for the candidate to speak about his experience? Are interviewers instructed in which questions they must avoid either legally, or as a best practice? +1 +1 â€"1 +1 8. What follow up do you provide? Do you follow up with interviewed candidates that you have decided to reject? Do you give candidates a specific time frame in which they can expect a follow-up? Do you follow through on your committed follow-up time frame? +1 +1 +1 Scoring If you scored a perfect 16, congratulations!  You’re the type of place that will easily attract and onboard high-quality talent.  Your listings will naturally appear at the top of job listings given your mobile-friendly status and plenty of information.  Last, but not least, rejected applicants will maintain a great impression of your organization and will help keep your reputation high. While we all strive for perfection, it’s a tough task to obtain, and maintain for that matter.  If your evaluation put the light on a few areas in need of improvement, it’s time to take action.  Many hiring processes can be fixed or upgraded with minor and easy to implement changes. If you lost points in the mobile category, a quick call to your tech team should do the trick.  In person interviews not your strong suit? Several best practices sessions can help make huge improvements in your hiring managers. At Simply Hired we want to navigate the recruitment waters and help your company obtain the best employees for the toughest of positions in a demanding job market.  Check back into this space often as we delve into the do’s, don’ts and tips for improving your hiring process including real-world examples of employers that do things right.

Study finds most people now think women are equal to men

Study finds most people now think women are equal to men Study finds most people now think women are equal to men America has finally gotten with the times. It took 70 years, but women are now seen as being just as competent as men, according to a new study published by the American Psychological Association. The research, published in American Psychologist, polled more than 30,000 American adults from 1946 to 2018 and looked at their responses to three key traits - communion, agency, and competence. Communion was defined as being compassionate and sensitive and the agency was related to ambition. Competence was based on intelligence or creativity.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The participants were asked to respond to whether a trait was either truer for women, men, or equal to both.“Challenging traditional claims that stereotypes of women and men are fixed or rigid, our study joins others in finding stereotypes to be flexible to changes in social roles,” said Alice Eagly, Ph.D., of Northwestern University. “As the roles of women and men have changed since the mid-20th century, so have beliefs about their attributes.”America’s perception of women has changed drastically. In a poll from 1946, only 35% surveyed thought men and women were equally intelligent, but by 2018, 86% found that both sexes were equally intelligent. Last year, more people believed women were more intelligent compared to men.“These current stereotypes should favor women’s employment because competence is, of course, a job requirement for virtually all positions. Also, jobs increasingly reward social skills, making women’s greater communion an additional advantage,” said Eagly. “On a less positive note, most leadership roles require more agency than communion. Therefore, the lesser agency ascribed to women than men is a disadvantage in relation to leadership positions.”

Lost Your Job Search Focus 5 Ways to Regain It

Lost Your Job Search Focus 5 Ways to Regain It Lost Your Job Search Focus 5 Ways to Regain It 4Let’s face it- whether you are a full-timer or a freelancer, job searches are stressful. Depending on how long it takes you to land the position or contract gigs that you’re looking for, you might be worried about dwindling finances, and the competition for desirable opportunities can be fierce. Trying to regain job search focus in the face of stress can be intimidating. With all of this pressure and work involved in the day-to-day happenings of a job search, it’s easy for job seekers to become distracted and lose focus. Here are some tips to help you regain job search focus and re-channel your energies when you have become sidetracked: 1. Make a daily plan. Sometimes regaining focus can be as simple as getting organized. You might feel overwhelmed during your job hunt because you haven’t created any systematic way to go about it. See your job search as a job in itself, and design some guidelines and boundaries around it to help shape your day and ensure that you hit your goals without burning out. For example, if you’re currently unemployed or are short on contract work, you might lay out a schedule for yourself that involves exercising in the morning, applying to 2-3 jobs in the afternoon, and networking or socializing in the evening. Employed job seekers might block off a few hours before going to the office to research opportunities, exercise during their lunch hour on their day job, and send out one job application per evening. 2. Take a walk. Conducting a job search can be intense with the need to juggle communication with recruiters, research  jobs and companies, participate in interviews, and handle salary or contract-fee negotiation on top of your other responsibilities on any given day. When you feel frazzled, get up from your desk and go for a walk to clear your head and catch a breather. 3. Connect with a mentor. Professional success is not a one-person job, which is why your network- and particularly your mentors- are so important. A mentor is someone who can help guide you through different challenges in your career, including providing advice about your job search. When you feel stuck, don’t suffer alone- reach out and ask your mentor for help, or find someone in your professional network you trust who you can turn to for fresh insights. 4. Start a mindfulness practice. Stressful times in our lives can be managed more effectively by becoming more mindful. Mindfulness practices like meditation or simply becoming more focused and aware of what you’re thinking about and doing rather than going on auto-pilot can help you keep your job search in perspective. Mindfulness exercises like journaling or creative visualization can also help you manage anxiety that you may feel around your job search. 5. Take a break. If you’ve tried the tips above yet still are having trouble finding  enthusiasm in your job search, it may be time to take a pause from it. You want your attitude and energy level during the search process to reflect passion and commitment for your career and industry- anything less is just not going to cut it with recruiters and hiring managers, whether for staff or freelance positions. Take a week or two off- or longer if necessary- from your active job search. Do things you enjoy during this time, and don’t pressure yourself to research positions, schedule interviews, or make progress toward the goal of landing new opportunities. Taking a break from the intensity and demands of looking for work can help you return to your job search with renewed commitment to reach your career goals. When you don’t get the results you want from your job search right away, it can shake your confidence and damage relationships, particularly if others are depending on your income. Don’t wait until you feel stressed out or lose your focus on your job search- be proactive, and challenge yourself to try some of these strategies today. Readers, how to you maintain or regain job search focus? What tricks have worked for you? Share your tips with us below!

What to Do Once You Sign Up for an Online Class - The Muse

What to Do Once You Sign Up for an Online Class - The Muse What to Do Once You Sign Up for an Online Class The first step is over: You’ve signed up for an online course. Now what? First of all, kudos to you for taking the initiative. With so many subject areas to choose from and talented professors to study under, we have our fair share of options today- particularly when it comes to advancing our careers. Perhaps you’re ready to learn a new skill and pivot your position entirely, or maybe you’re ready for that promotion but need some help negotiating. Whatever the case, these online courses can help prepare you for a huge milestone or a small win. But they’re just that- online. In an internet full of mesmerizing cooking videos, addicting quizzes, and disappearing snaps, it can be tough to stay focused when watching TV, let alone trying to learn. But if you want to reap the benefits of an online course, and I’m sure you do, you’re going to have to really dedicate yourself. What does that actually mean? That you should do the following (at least some of it): 1. Treat it Like an Actual Class (That You Can’t Fall Asleep In) If you’re just using your course as background noise while cleaning your apartment or cooking dinner, it’s about as effective as watching an exercise video while sitting on the couch. So, when you sign up, get ready to treat it as you would a real, live class. Set aside a couple hours a week and find a quiet, distraction-free environment to work. If you’re taking a self-taught course (which most online classes are), pace yourself with the lessons by coming up with a daily or weekly schedule to log on. And, don’t skip the assignments. Even if you think you fully understand the topic, plenty of research says you need to practice to make sure the learning sticks. 2. Participate in Discussions Many courses offer peer-to-peer discussion opportunities, which help you compare your progress to other students, ask questions, and get feedback. In a normal university class, this would be par for the course- but online, it’s easy to hide behind a username and use the “skip” button. Don’t do that, or you could risk missing a crucial lesson or example that could be useful later on. Participating in class discussions can help you discover different ways of looking at course information- whether that’s advice on assignments or better understanding the material. And forming study partners in real life might incentivize you to actually study more, if you have people you’re excited to discuss with and learn from. Most of the time, though, discussions force you to demonstrate how well you’ve mastered the material. Teaching or explaining to another person is a great test of your own understanding. 3. Apply What You Learn to Your Everyday Life It’s easy to take a course and, once you’ve finished it, move on without ever having actually done anything with it. To really make the most of an online course, make sure to actually use what you’ve learned in real life. Schedule meet-ups or use existing communities to discuss what you learned. Have a friend quiz you on the material, or work on a negotiation tactic you picked up in your office (or even on your significant other next time you can’t figure out what you want for dinner). You could even invite a friend or co-worker to take the same class so you can talk about it afterwards. That’s what online classes are for, after all- putting lessons into practice. I love taking online courses because they help me feel like I’m one step ahead, always ready to embrace the next challenge or opportunity my career throws at me. Whatever your reasoning for taking one, you can’t get what you need out of it without putting in 100%. So settle in, grab some coffee, and turn off the TV- your career will thank you.
